Medal commemorating Lieutenant-Commander Stephen Cassin (1783-1857) and the battle of Lake Erie, 1813. Obverse: Bust of the officer in uniform (right). Legend: 'STEP. CASSIN TICONDEROGA PRAEFECT. QUAE REGIO IN TERRIS NOS.' Below: 'NON PLENA LAB.' (Stephen Cassin, Captain of the Ticonderoga. What region of the earth is not full of our achievements?) Reverse: View of a naval action. Legend: 'VIAM INVENIT VIRTUS AUT FECIT'. Exergue: 'INTER CLASS. AMERI. ET BRIT. DIE X SEPT. MDCCCXIII.' (Between the American and British fleets, 11 September 1814.) The obverse is after the medal awarded by Congress and engraved by Moritz Fürst. It is signed by him, 'FURST. F.' below the truncation of the bust and in the exergue. The reverse shows the battle of Lake Erie from another Congressional medal.
