Medal commemorating Captain Lewis Warrington (1782-1851) and the action between USS 'Peacock' and HMS 'Epervier', 1814. Obverse: Bust of the captain in uniform (right). Legend: 'LUDOVICUS WARRINGTON DUX NAVALIS AMERI.' (Lewis Warrington, American Naval Captain.) Reverse: Port-quarter view of HMS 'Epervier', brig-sloop, her main topmast carried away (left) and port-quarter view of USS 'Peacock', sloop (right), both firing. Legend: 'PRO PATRIA PARATUS AUT VINCERE AUT MORI.' (Prepared either to conquer or die for his country.) Exergue: 'INTER PEACOCK NAV. AMERI. ET EPERVIE NAV. ANG. DIE XXIX MAR. MDCCCXIV.' (Between the American ship 'Peacock' and the English ship 'Epervier', 29 March 1814.) Fought off Cape Canaveral Florida. Signed 'FURST. F. below truncation of bust and in exergue near the lower right border.
One of a series of 27 medals commemorating American successes during the War of 1812, struck by special resolution of Congress. They were awarded to naval commanders in gold and to their officers in silver. The bronze examples are restrikes.
