Medal commemorating Admiral William Brown (1777-1857). Obverse: Bust of the admiral in uniform (three-quarter right). Legend: 'GUILLERMO BROWN ALMIRANTE ARGENTINO.' (William Brown, Admiral of Argentina.) Inscription: '22 JUNIO 1777 3 MARZO 1857.' (22 June 1777 3 March 1857.) Reverse: Inscription, 'CONSAGRADO AL MAR Y Á LA GLORIA TRAZÓ EL RUMBO DE SUS NAVES VICTORIOSAS Á LA OPACA LUZ DE LA REGION POLAR Ó BAJO LOS CIRCULOS ARDIENTES DE LA ESFERA.' (Dedicated to the sea and to the glorious achievement of the voyages of his victorious ships to the dim light of the Polar regions and the scorching heat of the tropics.) Admiral William Brown, born in Foxford, County Mayo, Ireland, accepted the command of the Argentine navy, fighting against Spain and Brazil.
