Medal commemorating the visit of Admiral François Ferdinand d'Orleans, Prince de Joinville (1818-1900) to Rio de Janeiro, 1838. Obverse: The prince in naval uniform standing on the shore being greeted by an Indian in robes, feathered hat and staff in right hand; the masts of a ship with sails furled (left) the bay in the distance. Reverse: Inscription, 'O PRINCIPE DE JOINVILLE DISEMBARCANDO N/O RIO DE JANEIRO 5/1 1838.' (The Prince de Joinville disembarking at Rio de Janeiro.)
