Medal commemorating the Battle of Riachuelo, 1865. Obverse: Head of the Emperor Don Pedro II within a semi-circular crossed sprays of laurel and lilly tied with a knot. Legend (within line): 'PETRUS II D . G . CONST . IMP . ET PERP . BRAS . DEF . 1865.' (Peter II by the Grace of God appointed Emperor and perpetual protector of Brazil, 1865.) Reverse: A shield inscribed 11 June 1865 on an anchor and cannon crossed, decorated with palm and oak sprays. Inscription (on shield): '11 DE JUNHO DE 1865.' Legend (within line): 'COMBATE NAVAL DO RIACHUELO.' (11 June 1865, The Battle of Riachuelo.) (The battle was fought on the Parana River, when the Paraguayan fleet was almost annihilated.) Fitted with a crown and ring and a white ribbon edged with green.
