Token commemorating HMS 'Jersey'
Token commemorating HMS 'Jersey'. Obverse: Starboard broadside view of the hulk of a two-decked battleship with one mast standing, an anchor between two skulls and crossbones below. Legend: 'THE OLD JERSEY.' Reverse: Under a length of studded chain cable inscription, 'A BRITISH PRISON DURING THE REVOLUTION NO. 5.' Legend: 'AUG. B. SAGE'S HISTORICAL TOKENS.' Issued by Augustus B. Sage (1842-1874) of New York, a founder of the American Numismatic Society, in a series of at least forteen, probably issued circa 1858-1862. The source of the obverse was the illustration in Albert G. Greene, 'Recollections of the Jersey, Prison-Ship; taken and prepared for publication from the original manuscript of the late Captain Thomas Dring, of Providence, R. I., one of the Prisoners' (Providence Rhode Island: H. H. Brown, 1829). [Information Robert C. Brookes 2015].
