VIII . MCMVI.' (The centenary of the reconquest of Argentina and the commission to erect a monument to the heroes of 1806-07.) This commemorates the defeat of the British Expeditionary Force under Brigadier-General W.C.Beresford and Admiral Home Riggs Popham that sailed to Buenos Aires in 1806-7 from the Cape of Good Hope and temporarily occupied the city.
