Plaque commemorating the homage of the Argentine navy to Dr B. Monteagudo. A plaque with curved top. Obverse: A draped female figure, laureate, standing on a quay, her arms outstretched over the harbour; the arms of Argentina wreathed and a wreath placed on either side of steps descending (left) to the water; a sailing ironclad at anchor (left), a soldier and sailor behind at the salute (right), inscription below: 'MONTEAGUDO ENCENDIÓ LA TEA DE LA REVOLUCIÓN EMANCIPADORA DE SUD AMERICA Y FUÉ UNA DE SUS PRIMERAS VICTIMAS.' (Monteagudo lit the torch of the Revolution, setting South America free, and was one of its first victims.) On wall: '1918.' Reverse: Above, an eagle flying over a mountain range; inscription below on a tablet surmounted by an oak-wreath and scroll. Inscription: 'FUNDO LA BIBLIOTECA NACIONAL DE LIMA SUPRIMÓ EL JUEGO, ORGANIZÓ LA JUSTICIA Y ABOLIÓ LA MITA, DEVOLVIENDO AL INDIGENA SU LIBERTAD Y ELEVANDOLO Á LA CATEGORIA DE CUIDADANO.' (He founded the national library of Lima, suppressed gambling, organised law, abolished the Mita, by setting the Indian free and raising him to the status of citizenship.) (The Mita was the law by which members of the local population were bound to their masters for life.) Above: '1787 - 1825.'
