Medal commemorating the N.D.L. Steamer 'Baltimore'. Obverse: The steamer 'Baltimore' grounded off Hastings. Legend: 'N.D.L. STEAMER BALTIMORE'. Exergue: 'OFF HASTINGS'. Reverse: Legend, 'KAJÜTS PASSAGIERE DES N.D.L. DÄMPFERS BALTIMORE.' Inscription: 'DEM SCHIFFSARZT HEIN[R]ICH SALZER FÜR SEINE AUFOPFERUNG WÄHREND DES SCHIFFBRUCHS IN DER NACHT VOM 22 TEN ZUM 23 TEN MAI 1872 VOR HASTINGS ENGLAND'. During the night of the 22nd May 1872, the Norddeutscher Lloyd steamer 'Baltimore', then proceeding from Southampton to Bremen, collided with a Spanish steamer 'Lorenzo Semprun' which was going in the opposite direction. The sinking 'Baltimore' was beached at Hastings and all her 130 passengers were saved, the damaged Spanish vessel put into Southampton. 'Baltimore' was salvaged after four days aground and taken to Southampton for repairs. Heinrich Salzer, who received the medal as a token of gratitude from the passengers, was a doctor with a practice in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. 'The Times' reported that all the passengers were Germans settled in America who were visiting their homeland.
