Half-angel
Edward IV half-angel. Obverse: The archangel St Michael piercing the dragon. Legend: 'EDWARD' DI GRA' REX . ANGL'. Reverse: Ship to right with mast in form of cross, surmounted by a top-castle. 'E' and a rose on either side of the mast. Royal arms at its base. Legend: 'O CRUX . AVE . SPES . UNICA'. This is one group of nine gold coins found in the Greenwich Palace excavations of 1970-71, in the lower Grand Square of the Old Royal Naval College. Two of the nine are now in the collections of the British Museum: the others are NMM MEC2690-96. For further information see notes to MEC2690.
