Medal commemorating Captain Paul König and the submarine 'Deutschland', 1916. Obverse: Bust of König (three-quarter right) in undress uniform. Legend: 'KAPITÄN KÖNIG FÜHRER DER DEUTSCHLAND'. (Captain König, Commander of the 'Deutschland'.) Reverse: The U-boat sailing past the English coast, over which emerges from the clouds a giant hand trying to grasp the vessel. The inscription 'BM' above Paul König’s left epaulette is the mark of B.H. Mayer's Hof-Kunstprägeanstalt founded by Bernhard H. Mayer in Pforzheim in 1871. These initials appear on several of the firm’s commemorative medals that were made during the First World War, such as those commemorating Hindenburg and the Vice Admiral Graf von Spee.
