Ingot commemorating the Oseberg Ship, 9th century

Rectangular shaped ingot. Obverse: Starboard broadside view of the Oseberg ship, sail set. Ship's crew manning the oars. Inscription: 'OSEBERG SHIP'. Reverse: Inscription, 'OSEBERG SHIP Ninth Century. The Oseberg ship is a magnificent example of the graceful design and careful construction methods that made Viking ships so seaworthy and durable. The personal vessel of a great Viking queen, this ship was lavishly embellished with woodcarving. She is the earliest known Viking ship equipped with both a sail and a mast.
