During the fifteenth century Prince Henry the Navigator sent caravels, commanded by daring Portuguese navigators, on voyages of discovery along the west coast of Africa. The caravel was well-suited for these voyages because she was extremely maneuverable, and with her triangular sails, she could make headway toward the wind.'
