Ingot commemorating the 'Otago'
Rectangular shaped ingot. Obverse: Port broadside view of 'Otago'. Sails set. Inscription: 'OTAGO'. Reverse: Inscription, 'OTAGO 1888-1889.' The famous author Joseph Conrad commanded the "Otago" for 14 months in 1888 and 1889. Years later he immortalized the ship and her crew in his masterpiece "The Shadow Line". Built in 1869 in Glasgow, Scotland, the 345-ton iron bark sailed until 1900, mainly on trading voyages in the South Seas.'
