Tureen with lid and stand

A two-handled soup tureen, in 'Arctic Scenery' pattern with a cover and matching stand. It is made of earthenware, transfer-printed in blue. On either side of the tureen is a scene of an Eskimo family based on an engraving by William Westall after F.W. Beechey in W.E. Parry's 'Journal of a Voyage for the Discovery of a North-West Passage' (London, 1821) entitled 'Esquimeaux of the Inlet called the River Clyde. West Coast of Baffins Bay'. At each end, a ship and iceberg from the same source, entitled 'Iceberg in Baffin's Bay July 1819'. There is a frieze of animals and flowers around the top and on the lid, which has a hole for the ladle. The stand has a central scene of Europeans and Eskimos on a dog sled with a border of European animals. This is a variation of the engraving 'Sledges of the Eskimaux' by Edward Finden after G.F. Lyon in W.E. Parry's 'Journal of a Second Voyage for the discovery of a North-West Passage' (London, 1824). The spoonbill and Arabian camel on the lid are from engravings by Thomas Bewick, as is the peccary and wolf on the tureen and the hare and rabbit on the stand.
