A Portsmouth halfpenny commemorating John Jervis, Earl St Vincent (1735-1823) and the battle of Cape St Vincent, 1797. Obverse: Neptune standing in his horse-drawn sea-car, a trident in his left hand, holding a wreath over the head of Admiral Jervis seated (left). Reverse: inscription, 'SR JOHN JERVIS WITH 15 SAIL PERSUED & DEFEATED THE SPANISH FLEET OF 27 SAIL OF THE LINE FEBRUARY 14TH 1797'. On edge: 'PORTSMOUTH HALFPENNY PAYABLE AT THOS. SHARPS'. Hole drilled through by Neptune's head.
