Naval Gold Medal (Flag Officer's) for The Battle of the First of June 1794
Flag officer's Naval Gold Medal and chain awarded to Admiral Lord Alexander Hood (1726-1814) for his services during the battle of the Glorious First of June 1794. Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse: Inscription within a wreath of oak (right) and laurel (left): 'SIR ALEXANDER HOOD K.B: ADMIRAL AND THIRD IN COMMAND ON THE I OF JUNE MDCCXCIV. THE FRENCH DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a loop and gold chain and has been glazed to protect the surface. Naval gold medals were awarded to those officers whom Lord Howe and Sir Richard Curtis considered had particularly distinguished themselves in this battle.
