Naval Gold Medal (Captain's) for The Battle of Camperdown 1797
Captain's Naval Gold Medal awarded to Captain John Wells (1763-1841) for the battle of Camperdown. Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse inscribed: ' * JOHN WELLS ESQUIRE * CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. THE LANCASTER ON THE 11 OCTOBER MDCCXCVII. THE DUTCH FLEET DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a gold rim, a watch glass on each side protects the surface. It is suspended by a gold bar and loop from a blue edged white ribbon with a gold buckle attached.
