Naval Gold Medal (Captain's) for the Battle of the Nile, 1798
Captain's Naval Gold Medal for the battle of the Nile awarded to Captain Alexander Ball (1756-1809). Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse inscribed: ' + ALEXANDER JOHN BALL ESQUIRE + CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. THE ALEXANDER. ON THE 1ST OF AUGUST MCCXCVIII THE FRENCH FLEET DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a gold rim, a watch glass remains in place on the obverse to protect the surface. It is suspended by a loop, gold bar and blue edged white ribbon.
