Naval Gold Medal (Captain's) for the Battle of Trafalgar, 1805
Captain's Naval Gold medal awarded posthumously to Captain John Cooke (1763-1805). Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse inscribed: ' + JOHN COOKE ESQUIRE + CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. BELLEROPHON ON THE 21 OCTOBER MDCCCV THE COMBINED FLEETS OF FRANCE AND SPAIN DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a gold rim with a watch glass on both sides to protect the surface. It is suspended from a loop and gold bar by a blue edged white ribbon with a gold buckle.
