Naval Gold Medal (Captain's) for The Battle of Cape St. Vincent 1797
Captain's Naval Gold Medal awarded to Cuthbert Collingwood (1750-1810) for the battle of Cape St Vincent. Obverse: Britannia, a spear in her left hand and a shield below, standing on the deck of an antique galley, her right foot resting on a helmet, crowned with a wreath by a winged victory. Reverse inscribed within a wreath of oak and laurel: ' * CUTHBERT COLLINGWOOD ESQUIRE * CAPTAIN OF H.M.S. THE EXCELLENT ON THE 14TH FEB. MDCCXCVII. THE SPANISH FLEET DEFEATED'. The medal is fitted with a gold rim with a watch glass both side to protect the surface. It has a loop and a ring for suspension. The ribbon is missing.
