Naval Reward, Garnet 1892

Obverse: Inscription the arms of Peru on a triangular shield ending in three points at the top, a palm branch (L) and a laurel branch (R). Inscription: "A LOS JEFES OFICIALES Y TRIPULACION DE LA CORBETA DE S.M.B."GARNET" POR SUS ABNEGADOS SERVICIOS EN LOS INCENDIOS ACAEDIDOS EN EL CALLAO EN LOS DIAS 18 Y 22 DE AGOSTO DE 1892" (To the chief officers and crew of His Britannic Majesty's corvette Garnet for their self-sacrificing services at the serious fire in Callao 18 to 22 August 1892). Reverse: Legend: "GRATITUD DEL GOBIERNO Y PUEBLO PERUANO" (The gratitude of the Government and people of Peru). This unique gold medal is held in trust for H.M.Ships named Garnet, and was presented to Capt. H.F. Hughes-Hallett for sending his men ashore under command of Lieut. (afterwards Vice-Adm) Sir W.C.Pakeham to assist in putting out a fire which threatened the city.
