Blane Medal for Medical Officers
Obverse: Head of Sir Gilbert Blane (L). Reverse Legend: "GILBERT BLANE BARONETTVS ARCHIATRVS AET.LXXXI". Britannia (L) a trident in her right hand, standing by a pedestal against which leans the staff of Aesculapius and an anchor; a seaman (L) supporting another in the state of collapse. Legend: "MENTE MANVQUE". Below: "FOUNDED MDCCCXXX". Inscribed on edge: "JAMES MACDONALD ROGERS FRCS H.M.S. INDEFATIGABLE 1896". Sir Gilbert Blane, P.M.O. to Admiral Rodney's Fleet in the West Indies, founded this medal for medical officers who kept approved journals. In fitted box of issue. Pistrucci (1783-1855) was chief medallist to the Royal Mint from 1817: his work on coinage ended in 1825 but he continued as a medallist until 1849, though also doing non-Mint work. Since the medal was established in 1830 and first submissions required by 1831 (which saw Blane's 81st birthday, the age the portrait profile shows him) the first medals were presumably struck at about that time.
