Prize medal, West London Medico-Chirurgical Society

Obverse: Frosted decoration. Draped female figure seated, a rod entwined with two serpents in her right hand; in the foreground books, microscope and other scientific apparatus. Behind the rayed sun. Legend: 'WEST LONDON MEDICO-CHIRURGICAL SOCIETY'. Exergue on scroll: 'MEDAL FOUNDED BY DR.PHINEAS ABRAHAM PRESIDENT 1910-1911'. Reverse: Inscription within a laurel wreath. Inscription: 'FOR MERIT PRESENTED BY THE COUNCIL OF THE SOCIETY TO' Incuse: 'FLEET SURGEON FRANCIS BOLSTER M.D. R.N. IN RECOGNITION OF HIS HEROIC CONDUCT ON HMS WARRIOR IN THE JUTLAND BATTLE 1916'.

Awarded to Francis Bolster MD (1874-1941). During the battle of Jutland, 'Warrior' came under heavy fire and there were 100 casualties amongst the crew, 68 of whom died. The ship was taken in tow by HMS 'Engadine' which took off the 743 survivors before the damaged vessel was abandoned and later sank.
