Egypt War Medal 1882-89

Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria in a diadem and veil (left) Legend: 'VICTORIA REGINA ET IMPERATRIX'. Reverse: the sphinx on an ornamental platform. Legend: 'EGYPT'. Exergue: '1882'. Inscription on edge: 'F.W. CHAINE MIDN. H.M.S. NORTHUMBERLAND'. Suspended from a clasp and blue ribbon with two white stripes.

Commander Francis William Chaine (1867-1923). Born at Muckamore, Antrim. Rated Midshipman, 15 July 1882 on passing out of 'Britannia'. Egyptian medal 1883. Appointed Lieutenant,1 April 1890. Resigned from the RN on 2 April 1890 owing to ill health and was employed as a Lloyds underwriter. Rejoined in 1903 as an emergency officer and was appointed Commander on 11 November 1918. During the First World War, he was in charge of Auxiliary patrol vessels at Portland. He married Edith Marion Pedder on 3 February 1898 in Kensington where he died.
