Obverse: Bust of King Edward VII in naval uniform with order and medals. Legend: 'EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR'. Reverse: Starboard broadside view of a barque-rigged steamer (Discovery) fast in the ice; a volcano in the distance; a group of six men in polar dress on skis in the foreground; a sledge with sail (left). Inscription on edge: 'SPECIMEN'. Bars: 'ANTARCTIC 1907-09', 'ANTARCTIC 1910-13', 'ANTARCTIC 1912-14', 'ANTARCTIC 1914-16', 'ANTARCTIC 1917', 'ANTARCTIC 1929-1931'. Fitted with a cusped bar and suspended from a white ribbon.
