1914-15 Star
A uniface star of four points, the upper covered by a crown, with two crossed swords entwined by a short scroll. Inscription: '1914-15.' An oak garland superimposed upon the whole. Inscription: 'G'. with a 'V' within it. Fitted with a ring and red, white and blue watered-silk ribbon. Reverse inscription: 'CMMR. F.W. CHAINE, R.N.'
Commander Francis William Chaine (1867-1923), Rated Midshipman 15 July 1882 on passing out of 'Britannia'. Awarded the Egyptian medal,1883, Lieutenant 1 April 1890. Resigned from the RN on 2 April 1890 owing to ill health and was employed as a Lloyds underwriter. He rejoined in 1903 as an emergency officer and appointed Commander on 11 November 1918. During the First World War, he was in charge of Auxiliary patrol vessels at Portland. He married Edith Marion Pedder on 3 February 1898 in Kensington.
