British War Medal 1914-18
Obverse: Head of King George V (left). Legend: 'GEORGIVS V BRITT : OMN : REX ET IND : IMP:' Reverse: A Knight on horseback (right) a short sword in his right hand, trampling on the German shield, skull and cross-bones. Legend: '1914-18'. Engraved on the edge: 'COMMR. F.W. CHAINE. R.N.' Fitted with a bar and orange watered silk ribbon edged with blue, black and white stripes.
Commander Francis William Chaine (1867-1923). Born in Muckamore, County Antrim. Rated Midshipman 15 July 1882 on passing out of 'Britannia'. Awarded the Egyptian medal,1883, Lieutenant 1 April 1890. Resigned from the RN on 2 April 1890 owing to ill health and was employed as a Lloyds underwriter. He rejoined in 1903 as an emergency officer and appointed Commander on 11 November 1918. During the First World War, he was in charge of Auxiliary patrol vessels at Portland. He married Edith Marion Pedder on 3 February 1898 in Kensington where he died..
