Polar medal, Arctic 1953
Polar medal awarded to members of Commander Cortlandt J.W. Simpson's North Greenland Expedition 1952-54. Obverse: Short bust of Queen Elizabeth II, laureate (right). Legend: 'ELIZABETH II DEI GRA:BRITT:OMN:REGINA: F:D:' Reverse: Starboard broadside view of a barque-rigged steamer (Discovery) fast in the ice; a volcano in the distance; a group of six men in arctic dress on skis in the foreground; a sledge with sail (left). Inscription on edge: 'SPECIMEN'. The medal is fitted with a cusped bar and white ribbon. Bar: 'ARCTIC 1952-54'.
