General Eliott's Medal for Gibraltar 1779-83

Obverse: A bird's-eye view of the rock and bay of Gibraltar showing the position of ships and batteries. Legend on a ribbon: "BATTERING SHIPS DESTROYED". Exergue: "SEPTEMBER XIII MDCCLXXXII". Reverse: The British Lion holding a shield of Gibraltar lying on an inscribed block: "BLOCKADE COMMENCED JUNE XXI MDCCLXXIX. SIEGE TERMINATED FEB.II.MDCCLXXXIII" Below, sprays of laurel encircling a long inscription: "BY A ZEALOUS EXERTION OF PATIENCE, PERSEVERANCE, AND INTREPIDITY, AFTER CONTENDING WITH AN UNPARALLELED SUCCESSION OF DANGERS AND DIFFICULTIES IN THE DEFENCE OF GIBRALTAR DURING A BLOCKADE AND SIEGE OF ALMOST FOUR YEARS THE GARRISON UNDER THE AUSPICES OF GEORGE III TRIUMPHED OVER THE COMBINED POWERS OF FRANCE AND SPAIN". In a fitted box with a miniature (frame only). Label on box: "...Vice admiral George Darby, d.1790. from Miss S.Quintin, Scampton Hale, Malton, Yorks." Box by "H & E Tessier....Jewellers...26 New Bond Street". Belonged to Vice Admiral Darby.
