Battle of the First of June 1794

Obverse: Engraved on a plate within a flat border, a foul anchor within a wreath entwined with a ribbon. Inscription: 'HAC VIRTUS MERCEDE DIGNA'. Reverse: Inscription: 'PRESENTED TO MR.A. DODDS SURGEON R.N. A token of regard from his comrades and friends in commmemoration of his gallant and devoted conduct in attending to the wounded on H.M.S. Tremendous during the action on 1ST JUNE 1794'. Fitted with a ring and dark blue ribbon.

Naval Surgeon Alexander Dods (1751-1802) is named on the muster list of HMS 'Tremendous' Sept 1794-June 1775 with his son Andrew Dods acting as surgeon's servant.- Andrew was awarded the Diploma of the Royal College of Surgeons in Edinburgh on 7 May 1806. Alexander had married Jenny or Janet Chalmers on 4 January 1782, in Edinburgh. He was the surgeon of HMS 'Artois' at the time of his marriage. He was appointed as as surgeon on 'Druid' in 1783. Dods died on 26 October 1802 in his birthplace Berwick upon Tweed.
