Royal Humane Society Medal 1776-1869

Awarded to George Griffin, Naval steward. Obverse: A nude boy with short cloak flying out from his shoulder, blowing on a torch held in his right hand. Legend: 'LATEAT SCINTILLVLA FORSAN' [Peradventure a little spark may yet lie hid]. Exergue: 'SOC . LOND . IN . RESVSCITAT . INTERMORTVORVM INSTIT . MDCCLXXIV'. [Society established in London for recovery of persons in a state of suspended animation]. Reverse: Within an oak garland tied with ribbon, name of recipient and inscription. Legend: 'HOC PRETIVM CIVE SERVATO TVLIT' [he obtained this reward for saving the life of a citizen] . Inscription: 'GEORGE GRIFFIN, STEWARD H.M.S. OPOSSUM'. [2 curved lines] 'VIT . OB SERV D.D. SOC . REG . HVM. 2 Nov 1856'. [4 straight lines]. [Vitam ob servatam dono dedit societas regia humana - The Royal Humane Society presented the gift for saving life]. Fitted with a ring and dark blue ribbon.

HM Gunboat ‘Plover’ was in tow of ‘Highflyer’ when a boy fell from one of ‘Highflyer’s‘ guns into the sea. A life buoy was thrown towards him but he did not appear to see it and Steward George Griffin leapt overboard to get it to him. ‘Highflyer’ hove-to and both men were picked up by boat. For this incident on 2 November 1856, Griffin was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal.
