Royal Humane Society Medal 1774-1869

Obverse: A nude boy with short cloak flying out from his shoulder, blowing on a torch held in his right hand. Legend: 'LATEAT SCINTILLVLA FORSAN'. Exergue: 'SOC . LOND . IN . RESVSCITAT . INTERMORTVORVM INSTIT . MDCCLXXIV'. Reverse: Within an oak garland tied with ribbon, name of recipient and inscription. Legend: 'HOC PRETIVM CIVE SERVATO TVLIT'. Inscription: 'THOMAS JOHNSON. A.B.' [curved lines] 'H.M.S. OCEAN VIT . OB . SERV . D . D . SOC . REG . HVM . 11 September 1850' [straight lines]. Thomas Johnson, born 1830 at Sheerness, was serving as an Able Seaman on HMS 'Ocean' (1805) in 1850. It was then flagship of Vice-Admiral George Elliot at Sheerness.

Johnson entered the Royal Navy in 1844 and was was promoted to Able Seaman on 18 Sept 1850. He volunteered for continuous service and is probably the Thomas Johnson in the 1861 census, then acting bosun 1st class in HMS 'Queen' at Beirut. In the 1871 census, he was bosun in 'Fox' at Stoke Damerel, Devon and in the 1881 census bosun, in 'Victory' at Portsmouth. He seems to have died before the 1891 census.
