Royal Humane Society Medal 1774-1869

Royal Humane Society Medal awarded to Frank Anthony Gataker (1844-1914). Obverse: A nude boy with short cloak flying out from his shoulder, blowing on a torch held in his right hand. Legend: 'LATEAT SCINTILLVLA FORSAN'. Exergue: 'SOC . LOND . IN . RESVSCITAT . INTERMORTVORVM INSTIT . MDCCLXXIV'. Reverse: Within an oak garland tied with ribbon, name of recipient and inscription.Inscription: 'T.A. GATAKER' [curved lines].'Midsn. H.M.S. Galatea VIT . PERIC . EXPOS . D . D . SOC . REG . HVM. 1 Jan. 1864'. [straight lines].The lack of reverse legend and the wording of the inscription indicates this was awarded for an unsuccessful rescue attempt. Awarded for attempting to save life from drowning. The initials are incorrect.

A seaman called John Fag fell overboard while soundings were being taken off the coast of Yukatan. Midshipman Frank Anthony Gataker (1844-1914) jumped overboard in an attempt to save him, but the man sank before he could be reached.

Frank Anthony Gataker (1844-1914) entered the Navy as a cadet on 15 June 1860. Promotion to Lieutenant 15 August 1869. While serving as a midshipman in ‘Galatea’ he attempted to save a seaman from drowning and was awarded the Royal Humane Society Medal. He retired from the Navy on 23 April 1873 and married Margaret Harding the same year in Cockermouth. The couple retired to Exmouth.
