Royal Humane Society Silver Medal 1869

Awarded to Robert Gordon Ferries (1875-1940). Obverse: A nude boy with short cloak flying out from his shoulder, blowing on a torch held in his right hand. Legend: 'LATEAT SCINTILLVLA FORSAN'. Exergue: 'SOC . LOND . IN . RESVSCITAT . INTERMORTVORVM INSTIT . MDCCLXXIV'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath tied with ribbon, name of recipient and inscription. Legend: 'HOC PRETIVM CIVE SERVATO TVLIT'. Inscription: 'VIT . OB SERV . D . D . SOC . REG . HVM .' [5 straight lines]. Inscription on edge: 'R.G. FERRIES. 7 FEBRUARY 1895'. Suspended by a cusped bar from a dark blue ribbon with a pin brooch attached.

Robert Patrick Gordon Ferries (1876-1940) served as an apprentice on the barque 'Fascadale'. The ship was wrecked near Port Shepstone, Natal, South Africa. Seventeen of the crew were rescued by a boat from the 'Norham Castle'. Her chief officer, Mr F. P. Whitehead swam from the boat towards the stricken vessel with a rope round his waist. He was met half way by Robert Ferries also swimming with a line in the opposite direction. The two ropes were joined together and enabled 17 of the men on board to be hauled on board the boat. Whitehead also rescued the captain.Ferries served in the Royal Naval Reserve during the First World War, rising to the rank of Lieutenant-Commander. He married Ina Forsyth in 1915 and died at Brighton in 1940.
