Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Marine Medal 1871-1874
Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Reverse: Inscription within an oak wreath. Incuse: 'TO FRANCIS YATES SCHOOL FRIGATE 'AKBAR' 26 JULY 1872'. [This appears to be the 1871 pattern but it lacks the 'Liver Bird' suspension and ribbon]. Inscription on edge: 'FOR GALLANTLY LEAPING INTO THE RIVER AND SAVING A SHIPMATE 21 JULY 1872'. Francis Yates was born in 1857 in Edinburgh. The 'Akbar' was a reformatory ship moored off Birkenhead.
