Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Marine Medal 1844-1871
Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on rim: 'LIEUT. L.C.F. WALKER R.N. FOR SAVING A LAD FROM DROWNING IN THE GEORGES DOCK MDCCCXLIV'. Silver frosted. glazed with a silver rim.
Awarded to Lieutenant Leven Charles Frederic Walker RN (1801-1876) for rescuing a boy from drowning at Liverpool, while serving as Inspector of the River Mersey. Walker was born at Southampton, Hampshire, he entered the Navy 10 July 1816. Employed on the Irish and West-Indian station, on one occasion when on pursuit of a smuggler, the ammunition caught fire and exploded. Walker had to jump overboard and suffered burns to his leg. 1821 he was severely wounded by a gun shot to his right hand leading to an amputated finger. 6 October 1822 Walker was made Lieutenant 6 October 1822, serving up until 1828 when he joined the Coastguard. From 1833 he was Inspector of the River Mersey. In June 1844 he swum to rescue a boy from drowning in Liverpool and on 28 September the same year received the silver medal of The Liverpool Shipwreck and Humane Society. He died in Brighton.
