Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Marine Medal 1874

Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'CHARLES HARVEY SECOND MATE BARQUE "THOMAS BROCKLEBANK" FOR RESCUING CREW OF THE LOUIS A SWETT ABANDONED IN A GALE AUG. 10 1877'. Suspended by a cusped clasp from a blue ribbon fitted with a pin buckle. The schooner 'Louis A Swett' was homeward bound from Accra to Boston laiden with palm oil. The Liverpool ship 'Thomas Brocklebank' was headed back to Liverpool from Jamaica when she encountered the US ship flying distress signals and taking on water which was gaining on the pumps. A boat from the 'Thomas Brocklebank' was sent to take off the exhausted crew. They had to be hauled through the sea as it was too rough to approach the schooner.
