Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Silver Marine Medal 1874
Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'CAPT. GEORGE H. HARRIS RNR., S.S. STAFFORDSHIRE FOR THE RESCUE OF CREW OF S.S. AIDAR 19 JAN 1896'. Fitted with cusped bar, blue ribbon and buckle.
Awarded to Captain George Henry Harris RNR (1854-1929) for his part in the following rescue -
'...the British steamer 'Aidar', from Odessa for Marseilles with grain and oilcake, foundered at sea on January 19th, 36-30 N 19.24 E. All aboard were saved except the saloon boy and landed at Port Said by the British steamer 'Staffordshire' from Liverpool to Rangoon. The primary cause of her foundering was her port boiler giving out during a heavy gale on the morning of January 18th.' Belfast news-letter 22 Jan 1896.
George Henry Harris (1854-1929), Master of SS 'Staffordshire' 1894 (Bibby Bros). He received a second Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society for his war service in SS 'Oxfordshire' then requisitioned from the Bibby Line and serving as a shuttle hospital ship in the English Channel. His war medals were issued in 1919 to an address in Lymington, Hampshire where he died in 1929.
