Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society Silver Marine Medal 1874
Obverse: A man kneeling on a piece of wreckage saving a woman and child from the water; in the distance a boat picking up a person from the water, a ship under sail on the horizon. Legend: 'LORD SAVE US WE PERISH'. Reverse: Within an oak wreath a 'Liver' Bird with an olive branch in its beak. (The crest of Liverpool). Legend: 'LIVERPOOL SHIPWRECK AND HUMANE SOCIETY 1839'. Inscription on edge: 'TO COMDR. GEORGE H. HARRIS. S.S. OXFORDSHIRE FOR GALLANT SERVICE 6/2/18'. Fitted with cusped bar, blue ribbon and buckle.
Awarded to George H. Harris (1854-1929). He received this second Liverpool Shipwreck & Humane Society for his war service in SS 'Oxfordshire' then requisitioned from the Bibby Line and serving as a shuttle hospital ship in the English Channel.
