Below truncation: 'W WYON MINT'. Reverse: Three men in a boat pulling a fourth out of the water, a broken spar below. Legend: 'LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP'. On spar: 'W.WYON MINT'. Inscription on edge: 'LIEUT JOHN BULLEY R.N. VOTED.MAR:4.1841'. Suspended from a loop and a ring by a light blue ribbon.
On 20th February, the Russian ship ’Castor’ laden with salt, ran aground in Atherfield Bay, Isle of Wight. Part of the crew were taken off by pilot boat. Coastguard Lieutenant John Bulley RN ( (1797-1866) saved the rest after getting a line on board by means of a rocket.
