Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Medal 1857-1862

Obverse: Head of George IV (left). Legend outer: 'ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECK'. Legend inner: 'GEORGE THE FOURTH PATRON 1824'. As MED0519 except the date '1824' is in line with the outer legend instead of the inner and made from a different die. Below truncation: 'W WYON MINT'. Clasps: 'SECOND SERVICE' and 'THIRD SERVICE'. Reverse: Three men in a boat pulling a fourth out of the water, a broken spar below. Legend: 'LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP'. On spar: 'W. WYON MINT'. Inscription on edge: 'DANIEL SHEA VOTED 7TH APRIL 1859'. Clasps: 'VOTED 3 FEB 1860'. 'VOTED 4 JANY 1866'. Suspended from a double dolphin bar by a dark blue ribbon fitted with two silver clasps.

Awarded to Daniel Shea (1821-1867) for rescuing the crew of the 'Ajax' while Chief Officer of the coastguard station at Porthcawl in 1859. While coxswain of the Padstow lifeboat in 1860, he received a clasp for service at the wreck of the 'James Alexander 'and a second clasp in 1866, while Chief Officer of the Padstow coastguard, for taking off the crew of the barque 'Juliet' in bad weather.
