Royal National Lifeboat Institution Silver Medal 1857-1862

Obverse: Head of George IV (left). Legend outer: 'ROYAL NATIONAL INSTITUTION FOR THE PRESERVATION OF LIFE FROM SHIPWRECK'. Legend inner: 'GEORGE THE FOURTH PATRON 1824'. As MED0519 except the date '1824' is in line with the outer legend instead of the inner and made from a different die. Below truncation: 'W. WYON MINT'. Reverse: Three men in a boat pulling a fourth out of the water, a broken spar below. Legend: 'LET NOT THE DEEP SWALLOW ME UP'. On spar: 'W. WYON MINT'. Inscription on edge: 'WILLIAM STEWART VOTED 3D . JAN . 1861'. Suspended from a double dolphin bar by a dark blue ribbon.

William Stewart was a commissioned coastguard boatman stationed at Ardmore, County Donegal. Steward helped to rescue seven men from the brigantine 'Diana' of Fredrikshamn which went ashore in Ardmore Bay in bad weather, in an RNLI lifeboat.
