Royal National Lifeboat Institution Badge for Valuable Services

Obverse: A circular badge. A lifebuoy of white enamel inscription in gilt lettering, a gilt crown above. View of a ten-oared lifeboat pitching in a heavy sea, a vessel on the horizon (centre). Legend on lifebuoy: 'ROYAL NATIONAL LIFEBOAT INSTITUTION'. Reverse: Inscription Incuse: 'Presented by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution to Commdr. C.E.F.Cunninghame-Graham, M.V.O. R.N. in recognition of his valuable services 1866-1908'. Fitted with a pin bar and bow of green ribbon. Awarded to Charles Elphinstone-Fleeming Cunninghame Graham RN, MVO (1854-1917) for services as District Inspector of Lifeboats.

Charles Elphinstone-Fleeming Cunninghame Graham RN, MVO (1854-1917) was born in Edinburgh and entered the Royal Navy in 1867. He served as Lieutenant in HMY 'Osborne' 1879-1883. He was awarded a silver Royal Humane Society medal in 1880 for saving the life of a waterman at Portsmouth. In 1887 he resigned his commission and served with the RNLI as District Inspector of Lifeboats, contributing to their technical development. He also actively participated in rescues. He rejoined the Navy in 1901 on the emergency list, being promoted Commander on 11 July 1903. He was made MVO in 1906, appointed Gentleman Usher to the King, 26 June 1908 and Groom of the Bedchamber 10 June 1910. He continued to hold this office under George V until his death.
