Tayleur Fund Medal 1854-1913

Obverse: Port broadside view of the full-rigged ship 'Tayleur', the main-top-mast carried away, driving on the rocks. Legend: 'TAYLEUR FUND FOR THE SUCCOUR OF SHIPWRECKED STRANGERS'. Reverse: Inscription: 'TO GEORGE DOHERTY H.M.S. Ajax FOR DISTINGUISHED GALLANTRY in saving of life AT KINGSTOWN 9 Feby 1861'. 'The Rt Honble Lord Talbot de Malahide, CHAIRMAN'. Fitted with a cusped bar and blue ribbon edged with white. Awarded to George Doherty, born 1842 in Buncrana, County Donegal. He took part in the attempts by the Kingstown (Dun Laoghaire) coastguard to rescue the crews of the colliers 'Industry' and 'Neptune', wrecked in a gale on 9 February 1861. Six of her men died, most notably Captain John McNeil Boyd, and the Tayleur Fund awarded 29 medals in silver to the surviving participants.

George Doherty (1842-1929) was born in Buncrana, County Donegal, Ireland in 1842. He spent his career in coastguard vessels in Ireland, North East England and Wales. He retired to Liverpool, where he died in 1929.
