Board of Trade Sea Gallantry Medal

Obverse: Head of Queen Victoria laureate (left). Below bust 'V.R.' Legend: 'AWARDED BY THE BOARD OF TRADE FOR GALLANTRY IN SAVING LIFE'. Reverse: Three men, one of whom is signalling to a rescuing life-boat in the distance and a woman with a baby, on a raft and a broken spar in a stormy sea. Inscription on edge: 'ALFRED JACOBS WRECK OF THE "AIDAR" ON THE 19TH JANUARY 1896'. Fitted with a bar and blue ribbon.

Awarded to Bibby Line steward, Alfred Jacobs. The British steamer 'Aidar' encountered bad weather on a voyage from Odessa to Marseilles with a cargo of grain and oil cake. After boiler problems she was sighted by the liner 'Staffordshire' who took off her crew with the exception of the saloon boy who perished. This involved three trips by the liner's lifeboats, on the second of which the boat was stove in. The last picked up the Captain of 'Aidar', William Nutman and an injured fireman. The vessel had sunk by this time and the survivors were clinging to an upturned boat.
