Tynemouth Medal 1911

Obverse: Within a decorated band a view of a cliff, lighthouse and buildings, a heavy sea breaking against it (right) the bow portion of a steamer ashore (left) the sail on the foremast in shreds and a lifeboat approaching it in the foreground. Legend: 'PALMAM QUI MERUIT'. Below: 'TYNEMOUTH MEDAL' Reverse: Within a decorated border and a palm and laurel wreath tied with a bow. Inscription: 'AWARDED TO HENRY SMITH 7TH July 1911 FOR BRAVERY IN SAVING LIFE AT SEA'. Name and date Incuse. Fitted with a cusped bar and a ribbon of three equal stripes of red, white and blue. Six medals were awarded for an attempted rescue of four boys who drowned at Whitley Bay. The medals were given red, white and blue ribbons in honour of the coronation of King George V.
