Lifesaving award
A plaque, uniface. Within a belted circle (centre), a ship on fire, a rowing boat proceeding to her. Inscription: 'In Remembrance of Robert Taylor, Late of Kingston, Jamaica.', 'To Capt William Greenhorn, of the barque 'Reaper' of Grangemouth, in gratitude for his services in saving the life of myself and family from my unfortunate ship 'Protector' in Hobsons Bay, Victoria, destroyed by fire on the 10th Sept at 11.p.m. Melbourne 21st Oct 1853'. 'Protector' arrived at Melbourne on the 15 August. The fire started at 11-30pm ...'She burned with unabated fury during the remainder of the night. Early on Sunday morning the Comet steamer came to he assistance, and towed her into an outside berth, and allowed her to go ashore on the beach. We may add that there were a great number of boats about the ship, which rendered every assistance to the parties on board. their has been no loss of life'.
