New South Wales Shipwreck Relief Society Medal 1882

Obverse: Foreground an angel bestows laurel wreath on a rescuer attending to a shipwrecked seaman and comforts the family of the injured man; background, a lighthouse and cliff (right) and a foundered sailing ship (left) with a boat putting off to avessel in distess, the whole surrounded by a heaving line and the legend: 'SUNT LACRYMAE RERUM SUNT ET SUA PRAEMIA LAUDI'. Reverse: A ships lifebelt with the name of the Society surrounds the inscription. Inscription on lifebelt: 'NATIONAL SHIPWRECK RELIEF SOCIETY OF N.S.W.' Inscription: 'AWARDED TO CHAS. W. BAKER for an act of bravery ON 3 JUNE 1882'. Fitted loop and bar suspended by a dark blue ribbon.
