Lifeboat Service Medal, 1894

Obverse: Lifeboat rescuing men from a dismasted wreck and from the water. Reverse Inscription: 'PRESENTED TO W.SALMON FOR GALLANT LIFEBOAT SERVICE ON JAN 4TH 1894 WRECK OF ST. ALEXEI'. Fitted with a ring and blue ribbon suspended from a bar and pin. A local medal presented to the crew of Clacton-on Sea lifeboat for the rescue of the crew of the Danish brigantine 'St Alexei'. On a voyage from Valborg and Arendal to Stranraer laden with wood, she struck on the Buxey Sand. The medal shows this specific rescue. The 'Essex Standard' 9 June 1894 gives a full account of the presentation.

William Salmon, mariner. Born in Great Clacton in 1853. In 1871 he was a crew member of 'Mischief' then at Newhaven. In the 1881 census, he is resident at Chatham, married to Ellen with one child Frances (later Potter) born at Clacton. The couple seem to have split up with Salmon subsequently returned to Clacton where he was recorded resident in the census 1891 to 1911.
